Montrose Fire Brigade - Community Programs

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS.

The CFA offers many different types of Safety Programs in our local area.

Fire Safe kids

The CFA's Fire Safe Kids is CFA’s flagship education program for primary and pre-primary students. It’s delivered by firefighters who visit your school with an engaging and interactive presentation.

Early Fire Safe

Research shows that children under 5 are especially vulnerable to injuries and death through burns and scolds. It suggests that children show an interest in fire at a very young age.

Learn how to prevent burns and scalds
If you have a child under the age of five, talk to your local Maternal and Child Health Centre or parents’ group about booking the Early Fire Safe Program.

The practical one-hour session covers:

  • How to prevent accidents and injuries

  • Product safety demonstrations

  • Being prepared for fire if one starts at home

Community centres and groups can contact their nearest CFA regional office to find out more about the program. Factsheets can also be downloaded here.

Community Fire Guard
If you are passionate about keeping your home and your family safe, and can get together with your neighbours or other locals from around your area, then Community Fireguard is for you.

This program is available for residents in high risk bush or grass fire areas, and is designed to help you:

  • Plan for a range of scenarios

  • Make informed decisions when it counts

  • Maintain a fire smart house and garden

  • Work together with your community to reduce everyone's bushfire risk

Find out more on the CFA website.

Practical Bushfire Planning Workshop
Planning for bushfire can be tough, so why do it alone? Develop your fire plan step-by-step at one of CFA's bushfire planning workshops.

During these small group sessions you will:

  • use local knowledge to prepare for a range of fire scenarios

  • receive practical, hands-on guidance from CFA to help you start, improve or review your plan

  • work alongside others and share ideas

Bushfire Planning Workshops run for between 2-3 hours. That might seem like a long session, but taking a bit of time now will help you to think clearly and make decisions when it really counts.

Remember - if you are caught in a bushfire it will be noisy, smoky, hot and extremely stressful. A well-thought-out plan can make all the difference. Find out more here.

Fire preparation Meetings
Every season is different so even if you have attended a meeting before, it’s important to attend one every year before summer.

Speak to CFA about:

  • How and where bush, grass or scrub fires are likely to start and spread around your local area

  • The most essential decisions you and your family need to make

  • How to stay informed should a fire start and threaten

  • Tips and updates to help you start or review your fire plan

  • One-hour fire safety meetings are a good opportunity to share views and experiences on managing fire risk, and make contacts or pool resources
